The station was built in the early 20th century on the site of a former Benedictine convent, which gave it its name. Its hall is one of the most beautiful anywhere: some 20,000 azulejo tiles painted by Jorge Colaço between 1905 and 1916.
The large blue panels show episodes from Portuguese history, such as the conquest of Ceuta and King John I's arrival in Porto, and a coloured frieze above tells the story of transport. It is still a working station, with suburban trains.
