The cathedral was begun in the 12th century on top of Penaventosa hill, the oldest core of the city, which is why it looks like a fortress, with battlements and two massive towers. Over the centuries it gained Gothic and Baroque additions, some by Nasoni.
The highlight is the Gothic cloister, lined in the 18th century with blue-and-white azulejo panels. In front, the Terreiro da Sé with its pillory is a natural viewpoint over the Ribeira rooftops and the river.
