Before you go
Start at the Clérigos Tower and Livraria Lello, walk down past São Bento and Rua das Flores to the Ribeira, then cross the lower deck of the Luís I bridge to the Gaia cellars. That way most of the walk is downhill.
Livraria Lello is visited with an entry voucher bought online or at its ticket office, and the price comes off any of the shop's own books you buy. Queues are shortest first and last thing.
The market opens Monday to Saturday (closing earlier on Saturdays) and is shut on Sundays and public holidays.
The Gaia cable car climbs from the riverside towards Serra do Pilar, and the Guindais funicular links the Ribeira with Batalha: both save you the steepest hills.
