Before you go
Serra do Pilar and Jardim do Morro face west towards the Ribeira, so the evening light falls straight onto the coloured houses. Cross on the bridge's upper deck, where the metro runs alongside a footpath.
Miradouro da Vitória and Jardim das Virtudes are a few minutes from the Clérigos Tower and are usually far quieter than the Gaia side.
Going up the Clérigos Tower is paid and means more than 200 steps. Buy your ticket on its website to skip the street queue.
The Palácio de Cristal gardens are free and open during the day. Their terraces look over the river from the far side of the centre.
