The German landscape architect Émile David designed them in 1865 for the Crystal Palace, an iron-and-glass exhibition hall demolished in 1951. The current domed pavilion, the Pavilhão Rosa Mota, stands in its place.
The gardens keep their romantic feel: lime-tree avenues, ponds, sculptures and peacocks roaming freely. From their terraces on the edge of the hill you can see the Douro all the way to its mouth and the Gaia bank.
