The Lello brothers opened the bookshop in this building in 1906, with a neo-Gothic façade and a carved-wood interior centred on a red staircase that splits in two. Above it, a large stained-glass skylight lights shelves that reach the ceiling.
Its fame grew with the legend that it inspired Harry Potter, since J. K. Rowling lived in Porto in the early 1990s, though she has said she never went in. It is still a working bookshop, with its own editions of the classics.
