Charles IV began it in 1344 with French architect Matthias of Arras, and Peter Parler, builder of Charles Bridge, carried on the work. The Hussite wars left it half-finished, and it was only completed in 1929, with the Gothic Revival front you see from the courtyard.
In the Chapel of St Wenceslas, its walls set with semi-precious stones, the Bohemian crown jewels are kept under lock. The tomb of St John of Nepomuk uses about two tonnes of silver, and Alfons Mucha's 1931 stained-glass window is in the third chapel on the left.
