The Jesuits had it built between 1704 and 1755, with Christoph Dientzenhofer, his son Kilián Ignác and Anselmo Lurago, who added the bell tower. It is the high point of Prague Baroque: the green dome, about 70 metres high, dominates Malá Strana, and inside it is all frescoes, statues and faux marble.
Mozart played its organ in 1787, and a few days after his death in 1791 a memorial Mass was held here. Under Communism, the secret police watched nearby embassies from the bell tower.
