The wall belongs to the palace of the Grand Priory of the Order of Malta. After John Lennon's murder in 1980 someone painted his portrait, and young people began filling it with Beatles lyrics and messages against the Communist regime; the police whitewashed it and it was painted again.
Since 2019 the Order of Malta has taken more control of what goes on it: there are commissioned murals, and free spray-painting is discouraged and at times banned. Even so, the wall keeps changing and is still full of colour.
