Charles IV laid the first stone in 1357 and Peter Parler oversaw the work; it was finished in the early 15th century. It runs 516 metres over 16 arches, and until 1841 it was Prague's only bridge across the Vltava. Legend says eggs were added to the mortar to make it stronger.
The 30 Baroque statues were added from 1683 onwards; almost all are copies, with the originals in the Lapidarium and the Vyšehrad casemates. At the statue of St John of Nepomuk, people touch the bronze plaque for luck and to return to Prague.
