Strahov Monastery

Hradčany

The Premonstratensians founded the monastery in 1143 and still live here. Its library holds some 200,000 volumes in two Baroque halls: the Theological Hall, from 1679, with stucco and 17th-century globes, and the Philosophical Hall, from 1797, with a ceiling painted by Anton Maulbertsch rising 14 metres high.

In the corridor between them is a cabinet of curiosities with stuffed sea creatures and natural oddities. Next door, the monastery brewery makes its own beer.
