The Almohads built it around 1220 as a watchtower joined to the city wall, and a chain was stretched from it to the other bank to block ships. It has twelve sides; the second tier is 14th-century and the yellow top was added in the 18th, after the Lisbon earthquake.
Its name is put down to the golden gleam its façade materials gave off in the sun. Inside is the Maritime Museum, with models, nautical charts and mementos of the age when Seville held the monopoly on trade with the Americas, plus a terrace over the river.
