Renzo Piano's building for the NEMO science museum opened in 1997 above the IJ tunnel, shaped like a green ship's bow rising from the water. Its sloping roof is a huge stepped plaza you can climb for free without entering the museum.
At the top are terraced seating, fountains and, since the latest refurbishment, a garden. It is one of the highest and most open viewpoints in the centre, taking in the Oosterdok, the Maritime Museum's ship, Centraal Station and the old town's rooftops.
