The square surrounds the Noorderkerk, a Protestant church of 1623 built on a Greek cross plan at the northern end of the Jordaan. Markets have been held here since the 17th century, and the square is still the heart of neighbourhood life.
On Saturdays the organic market sets up, with bread, cheese, mushrooms, vegetables and food to eat on the spot, and more stalls spill into Westerstraat. Monday mornings bring a market of fabrics, second-hand clothes and antiques.
