The balconies and mosaic facade of Casa Batlló

Casa Batlló

Passeig de Gràcia

Between 1904 and 1906 Gaudí transformed an ordinary building on Passeig de Gràcia for the industrialist Josep Batlló. The façade seems alive: coloured trencadís mosaic that shimmers like scales, bone-like columns and mask-shaped balconies.

The curved roof, with tiles that suggest a dragon's back, and the tower topped by a cross are often read as the legend of Saint George. Inside there are hardly any straight lines, and the light well shifts from dark to pale blue to spread the light evenly.
