In the early 20th century the businessman Eusebi Güell commissioned Gaudí to build a luxury housing estate on the Carmel hill. The project failed, only two houses were built, and the land became a public park in 1926.
The Monumental Zone holds the famous parts: the stairway with the trencadís dragon, the hall of columns that was meant to be the market and, above it, the large terrace with the wavy mosaic bench, designed with Josep Maria Jujol, looking out over the city and the sea.
