It is one of the names that always comes up when you ask about Porto's best francesinha. This sandwich was born in the city in the mid-20th century as a local take on the French croque-monsieur.
It is made with sliced bread, steak, sausage, ham and cured meat, topped with melted cheese and drowned in a hot tomato-and-beer sauce, usually with chips. Café Santiago serves it in a plain neighbourhood dining room near Rua de Santa Catarina.
