It opened in 1921 on Rua de Santa Catarina under the name Elite and was soon renamed Majestic. Its Art Nouveau interior, with carved mirror frames, stucco ceilings, leather and period lamps, was thoroughly restored in the 1990s.
It was a meeting place for Porto's bourgeoisie and intellectuals, and today it is one of the most visited historic cafés in the peninsula. As well as coffee it serves breakfasts, teas and simple dishes.
