Jewish Quarter (Josefov)

Josefov

It was the Jewish ghetto from the 13th century. Between 1893 and 1913 almost the whole quarter was demolished for Art Nouveau buildings, and only six synagogues, the Jewish Town Hall and the cemetery were spared. The Old-New Synagogue, from around 1270, is the oldest in Europe still in use.

In the Old Cemetery, used from 1439 to 1787, some 12,000 headstones stand in layers; Rabbi Loew, credited by legend with the Golem, lies here. The walls of the Pinkas Synagogue bear the names of some 80,000 Czech victims of the Holocaust.
