It was Prague's main market from the 12th century, where Central European trade routes crossed. Around it stand coloured Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque houses, the Town Hall with its astronomical clock, the Kinský Palace and the churches of Týn and St Nicholas.
In the middle is the monument to Jan Hus, the reformer burned in 1415, unveiled in 1915. In the paving by the Town Hall, 27 white crosses mark the Protestant nobles executed here in 1621 after the Battle of White Mountain.
