The present market opened in 2005 over the ruins of San Jorge castle, the seat of the Inquisition in Seville from 1481. The ruins can be seen beneath the building in a free visitor centre, and beside it the Callejón de la Inquisición leads down to the river.
Outside it is clad in Triana tiles; inside are stalls of fish, cured meats, fruit and spices, with bars between them for tapas, oysters or a mid-morning beer. There is even a small cookery school.
