There have been castles on the hill since the 13th century, but the palace you see is largely 18th and 19th century, rebuilt after it was destroyed in the siege of 1945. Today it houses the Hungarian National Gallery, which stays here after its move to City Park was cancelled in 2026, and the Budapest History Museum.
The courtyards, terraces and gardens are free to wander. Look out for the King Matthias fountain, the mythical Turul bird above the gate by the funicular and the buildings reconstructed in recent years, such as the former riding hall.
